Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit, has been making waves in the athletics world. He financed Athlos, a women-only track-and-field event in New York, which gained major traction. His philosophy? "High prizes motivate athletes and attract attention."

World Athletics President, Sebastian Coe, explains: "We want a large global audience every year. The Ultimate Championship is designed to fill that gap in the calendar."
Coe, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, emphasizes the importance of understanding the audience and unlocking new fans while retaining the traditional ones. The format, he says, is the result of extensive research and data-driven decisions.
The Ultimate Championship will feature a compact three-day program, delivering 28 disciplines in a fast-paced, television-friendly format. "It's three evenings of pure excitement, with straightforward finals for field events and semi-finals and finals for track events. Our fans deserve to see the best of the best," Coe adds.
But what about the athletes? Several legends of the sport, including the iconic Usain Bolt, have shown their support for the new championships.
Two-time world 110m hurdles champion, Colin Jackson, says: "I love the purity of the idea. It's simple: head-to-head competitions with no complications. You can just sit back and enjoy the process."
Jackson believes the new format will motivate athletes to prove their mettle and establish who is truly the best in their event. "It's about the Olympic champion, the world champion, and the Diamond League winner going head-to-head. It's an exciting prospect," he adds.
And here's the controversial bit: the Ultimate Championship isn't just about the money. It's about ensuring professional athletes can earn a sustainable living from their sport.
World Athletics CEO, Jon Ridgeon, explains: "In the last Olympic cycle, we paid out $25 million in prize money. This cycle, we've doubled that amount. We're working to develop the sport at the grassroots level, but we also want to ensure our top athletes can make a viable living from athletics."
Ridgeon continues: "Our talented athletes are in demand across other sports, so we need to make sure they stay in athletics and can earn a decent professional wage. They deserve it."
