Lions' Brian Branch Suspended: The Punch Heard 'Round the NFL (2025)

Lions' Brian Branch Suspended for Punching Chiefs' JuJu Smith-Schuster

The NFL has handed down a one-game suspension to Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch for unsportsmanlike conduct following a heated exchange with Kansas City Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. The incident occurred after the Chiefs' 30-17 victory over Detroit on Sunday night, sparking a postgame scuffle.

Branch's aggressive action, a right hook aimed at Smith-Schuster, was deemed a serious violation of league standards. League vice president Jon Runyan emphasized the act's unwarranted nature and the risk it posed to other players. The incident reflects poorly on the NFL and its values of sportsmanship and fair play.

This suspension comes as a setback for the Lions, who are already dealing with a banged-up secondary. Detroit will face the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers without Branch, who is eligible to return to the active roster on October 21st, just in time for their home game against the Minnesota Vikings on November 2nd.

The incident began when quarterback Patrick Mahomes extended his hand to Branch, who walked past him. Smith-Schuster then approached Branch, leading to an exchange of words. Branch's response was a physical one, knocking Smith-Schuster to the ground. The receiver quickly recovered and engaged in a physical confrontation with Branch, with running back Isiah Pacheco attempting to intervene. The situation escalated, with Branch removing Smith-Schuster's helmet as players from both teams joined the fray.

Smith-Schuster sustained a bloody nose, and Branch later admitted to a moment of childish behavior, citing frustration with on-field bullying. This is not the first time Branch has faced disciplinary action; he was fined for facemask and unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties against the Green Bay Packers last month.

Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed his disapproval, stating that such behavior is not tolerated within the team's values. He apologized to Chiefs coach Andy Reid and the team, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable.

Despite the incident, Branch remains a key player for the Lions, having been drafted in the second round in 2023 and earning Pro Bowl recognition last season. His recent success with the franchise makes the suspension a significant challenge for the team's morale and performance.
